Is XChat end-to-end encrypted?
Yes, according to X Corp. XChat uses end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for direct messages, meaning only you and the recipient can read them — not X, not governments, not third parties. Keys are stored locally on your device. A PIN protects message history on new devices. Note: this is XChat-specific; regular X Direct Messages (DMs) are not E2EE by default.
What is XChat exactly?

Who made XChat? Is it Elon Musk?
XChat is built by X Corp, the company owned by Elon Musk. Elon announced the feature personally on X and has promoted it as a privacy-respecting alternative to mainstream messengers. The development team is part of X's internal engineering organization, but specific team member names have not been made public.
How do I get XChat?
Open the
Apple App Store on your iPhone or iPad, tap "Get" to download (it's free), and sign in with your X account. Android users currently have no way to get XChat — the app does not exist on Google Play.
How to change your XChat PIN?
Open the XChat app, go to Settings → Security → Change PIN. You will need to enter your current PIN and then set a new one. If you have forgotten your PIN, you may need to re-authenticate with your X account credentials.
How to delete messages in XChat?
Long-press any message and select "Delete". You can choose "Delete for me" (removes it from your view only) or "Delete for everyone" (removes it for all chat participants). Full chat history deletion is available under Settings → Privacy → Clear Chat History.
Does XChat work without a phone number?
Unlike WhatsApp and Signal, XChat is tied to your X account, not your phone number. This means you can sign up with just an email or your existing X handle. That's a privacy advantage for users who don't want to expose their phone number to contacts.
Can I use XChat on my computer or desktop?
Not yet as a standalone app. However, XChat messages are synced with your X account, so you can read and send XChat messages from
x.com in any desktop browser. A dedicated XChat desktop app has not been announced.

Does XChat replace X Direct Messages (DMs)?
Not replace — extend. Regular X DMs still exist and are not end-to-end encrypted by default. XChat is the encrypted layer on top, for conversations where privacy matters. You can choose whether a given chat is a regular DM or an XChat encrypted thread.
Does XChat have video calls?
Yes. Video calls were included in the April 24, 2026 launch. Both one-on-one and group video calls are supported, with end-to-end encryption applied to the audio and video streams.
Does XChat have disappearing messages?
Yes. Disappearing messages shipped with the launch. You can set messages to auto-delete after a chosen duration in any chat. Screenshots are also blocked with notifications sent if someone tries to capture your messages.
Does XChat support CarPlay?
No. CarPlay support has not been announced as of the April 24, 2026 launch. XChat is currently an iPhone/iPad app only; in-car messaging integration may arrive in future updates.
How do XChat group invite links work?
XChat uses joinable group links similar to WhatsApp and Telegram. A group admin generates an invite link (or QR code) and shares it. Anyone with an X account who clicks the link can request to join. Admins approve or decline requests.
